“The Avengers” Nets Biggest Opening Weekend Ever

“The Avengers” demolished the weekend box office, shattering several records on its opening weekend. The movie had the highest grossing weekend of all time with $200.3 million. It became the first movie to ever gross over $200 million in a single weekend. The previous record holder was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2 which raked in $169 million.
The movie had the second highest single day take ever on Friday with $80.5 million. It went on to have the biggest Saturday haul of all time with $69.7 million. The dropoff from Friday to Saturday was remarkably small for a big movie, showing that word of mouth was strong for the film.
“The Avengers” opened internationally last week and set records across the globe. The film’s total revenue now stands at a staggering $641.8 million over just 12 days.
The blockbuster was the first to be distributed by Disney since the media company bought Marvel. The smashing success of the superhero team up film shows that comics are still dominating the box office. It was another Marvel based film, the original Spider-Man movie, that was the first to cross over $100 million over a three day weekend. Marvel properties are now the first to cross the $100 million and $200 million threshold.
