DeLuna Fest Lineup Announced

Posted by David Merrell On April - 18 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

Organizers announced the lineup for DeLuna Fest 2012 on Tuesday morning. Headlining this year’s event will be grunge legend Pearl Jam and the Foo Fighters. Other confirmed acts include DJ Jazzy Jeff, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Florence and the Machine, Band of Horses, Dwight Yoakam, and Ben Folds Five. A third headliner will be announced in the coming months. The event will take place September 21-23 of this year.

Tickets went on sale yesterday morning. Advanced pricing for the event starts at $159.95. General admission will be $199.95.

DeLuna Fest began in 2010 and is held on Pensacola Beach. It is named after Spanish conquistador Don Tristan De Luna who landed on Pensacola Beach in 1559. He founded one of earliest colonies in the US when he arrived. According to the DeLuna Fest website, De Luna threw a party upon making it to dry land and that is what DeLuna Fest was attempting to revive. The colony was destroyed by a hurricane a few months later. After De Luna left, the area would not be settled again until 1698.

Personal Freedom Under Attack in Florida

Posted by David Merrell On June - 23 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

A pair of rules in Florida, one being considered and one already passed, should have us all concerned. Escambia County is forcing all new teachers it hires to be “tobacco free”. They will not hire any teacher who has smoked in the last six months. The rule wreaks of discrimination and will likely not stand up in court. The second area of concern is on Pensacola Beach. The Santa Rosa Island Authority is thinking about banning alcohol on the boardwalk. That law would probably stand.

The thinking behind the teacher smoking ban is that it will save the state money on teacher’s health insurance. They are attacking the problem the wrong way. The state could simply not provide insurance to smoking teachers, or they could force them to pay more into their insurance coverage. A solution can be found that does not involve discrimination.

The ban on alcohol on the boardwalk is not quite as serious an issue as the teacher smoking ban, but it is part of a worrying trend. The idea behind this ban is to make the boardwalk more family friendly, and that is a noble thought. The juice may not be worth the squeeze in this situation, however. Most people are able to have a drink and behave in public. The few that can not should be dealt with by the police. More laws and regulation are not always the answer.

Personal freedom and liberty is under attack in this country. Both political parties are guilty of this assault. Our lawmakers need to realize the citizens of this country are not children who need laws to dictate everything to them. We pride ourselves on the individual liberty guaranteed to us by the constitution.
