SEC Matchups Dictating Top Ten
Another week, another match up of two top ten SEC teams. This week featured a battle between #3 South Carolina and #9 LSU. After a disappointing loss to Florida last week, the Tigers turned things around with a 23-21 come from behind victory over Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina team. It is the second straight week in which the high ranked SEC team has fallen to the lower ranked top ten team. An all to familiar scenario where SEC teams beat up on each other all season is playing out yet again this year.
Top ranked Alabama took care of business with a dominant 42-10 victory over Missouri. The Crimson Tide featured a pair of 100 yard rushers in Eddie Lacy and TJ Yeldon. Overall Alabama gained 362 yards on the ground. AJ McCarron turned in another efficient performance, going 16/21 for 171 yards. The Tide put even more distance between themselves and the rest of the country.
West Virginia, the #5 team in most polls, was blown out by Texas Tech 49-14. Heisman candidate Geno Smith was held to 1 TD on 29/55 passing. The Mountaineers discovered life will be a lot harder in the Big 12 than it was in the Big East.
A few other top ten teams survived some close calls this weekend. Fourth ranked Florida slipped by Vanderbilt, 31-17. Number 6 Kansas State squeezed by Iowa State, 27-21. Number 7 Notre Damme needed overtime to get by Standford, 20-13. Lastly, #8 Ohio State squeaked by Indiana 52-49.
