Searcy Closure Date Finalized

Searcy Hospital will close its doors on October 31. It was announced back in April that the hospital would be closing, but the final date was not finalized until today. The closure is one of many across the country as care is being switched to community based centers. A new hospital will be built in Tuscaloosa that is scheduled to be opened in May of 2013.
The closing will have a significant effect on the local economy, as Searcy employs about 250 people. Some will be offered transfers, while others will retire. Many will be left with no options. The Alabama Department of Mental Health has been working to try and make sure employees find new jobs.
