Alabama is currently the top ranked team in all major college football polls, but one ESPN analyst thinks the team might be getting a bit to much praise. Mel Kiper Jr. said in a recent web chat that Alabama was a bit overrated. He cited the weakened condition of the two big teams Alabama beat, Michigan and Arkansas. Kiper believes Alabama has yet to be tested. He went on to say that it was to early to be declaring them national champions.
Kiper is right to say that its way to early to be handing anyone the crystal ball. In college football, anything can happen. He is also correct in stating that Arkansas and Michigan were banged up when Alabama played them. Both teams were missing a number of key players when they lined up against the Crimson Tide.
Kiper misses the mark by declaring Alabama overrated. Those teams may have been banged up, but Alabama obliterated them. The games were never in doubt, and the Tide looked absolutely dominant in all three of their wins. They have performed well in all aspects of the game. AJ McCarron has picked up right where he left in in the BCS title game earlier this year. Eddie Lacy and TJ Yeldon have teamed up to make up for the loss of Trent Richardson. The defense may not be as good as last year’s legendary group, but it still looks like one of the best in the nation.
Based on what we have seen this year, there is not an argument for another team to be ranked above Alabama. They are the defending national champions, and they have destroyed everyone put in front of them so far. The one team that has been ranked ahead of the Crimson Tide (USC) has already lost a game this season. Alabama crushed the current #2 team in the BCS Championship just a few months ago.
All of the evidence points towards Alabama being the best team right now. That could change in the future, and there is no guarantee that they will win the championship. To say they are overrated though is a long stretch. They are rated right where they belong, and that is on top.
