Elysium squeezed by We’re the Millers to come out on top on the domestic box office this weekend. The movie brought in $30.5 million, coming up just short of industry expectations. The film was expected to bring in around $35 million. Elysium features Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. We’re the Millers was close behind with $26.6 million.
The box office saw several big openers this week, with the two aforementioned films joined by Planes and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. Planes opened third with about $22.5 million, while Percy Jackson brought in $14.6 million. Planes is a spin-off of the hit Pixar film Cars, though it didn’t perform nearly as well as its predecessor.
The number of big films opening this weekend may have weakened each film’s individual haul, but business was great for the overall box office. Compared to the same weekend last year, receipts were up 5%. The box office has recovered from an early slump to have a very good summer.
