Copper Thieves Strike Celeste Road Business

Posted by David Merrell On September - 21 - 2012

Copper thieves are at it again in Mobile County. The latest victim is SC Stagner Contracting on Celeste Road in Chunchula. Security cameras at a neighboring business, American Environmental, caught images of a potential suspect. Fences on both properties were cut, but American Environmental found nothing missing. Nearly $5,000 worth of copper wire tubing and welding leads were stolen from SC Stagner Contracting.

Copper theft has been a recurring problem in the area for months. Air conditioners have been hit across the county. Even wiring from telephone polls has been stolen. Crime typically goes up in a rough economy, and this time around is no exception.

The skyrocketing price of metals is making the problem worse. It is believed that metal theft is costing us around $1 billion a year. The collateral damage caused by the theft is usually more expensive than the metal itself. Copper is currently going for around $3.78 per pound.

Anyone with information in regards to this robbery should contact the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office at (251) 574-8633.
