Alabama Remains On Top With Big Game Looming

Posted by David Merrell On October - 28 - 2012

The Alabama Crimson Tide quietly destroyed an undefeated team yesterday. In a game that did not receive much hype, the nation’s top ranked team dismantled an undefeated Mississippi State team by a score of 38-7. The Crimson Tide rolled to victory with their usual formula: a dominant rushing attack, and the precision passing of AJ McCarron. Freshman TJ Yeldon led the backfield this time around, with 10 carries for 84 yards and a touchdown. Next weekend, the Tide faces the LSU Tigers, who are fresh off of a bye week. It will be the stiffest test for Alabama this season, and the last big obstacle between them and the SEC title game.

Georgia took control of its own destiny with a big win over Florida. The Gators had been ranked as the number two team in the country according to the BCS (and this website), but they could not hang on to the ball on Saturday. The Bulldogs took advantage of six Florida turnovers to topple the Gators 17-9. The win puts Georgia in the driver’s seat in the SEC East. If the Bulldogs win out, they will be in the SEC title game.

Florida wasn’t the only top ten team to fall this week. Notre Dame kept their undefeated season alive with a big win over #8 Oklahoma. The Fighting Irish blasted the Sooners 30-13, a stunning win that few predicted. Notre Dame now has a real shot at an unbeaten season, with USC being their last ranked opponent the rest of the way. The Trojans were upset by Arizona on Saturday as well, so that game looks very winnable at this point. The final top ten team to fall was Oregon State, who lost late Saturday night to Washington by a score of 20-17.

In other top ten news, Kansas State remained unbeaten with an impressive 55-24 win over #14 Texas Tech. Oregon blasted Colorado 70-14. Florida’s loss means Kansas State and Oregon movie up, with the Cougars taking the #2 spot in our poll, and Oregon jumping to #3. Notre Dame leapfrogs Ohio State in our poll to the #5 spot, despite the Buckeyes win over Penn State. The Fighting Irish win over Oklahoma was just too impressive to ignore.
